Souvenez-vous, ça avait commencé ici mais je crois que le sujet mérite plus qu'un seul post, il mérite un topic à lui tout seul puisqu'il s'agit de 21 jours (à peu près) de voyage et de reportages quotidiens....

CONVOI D’AIDE HUMANITAIRE – UNE CHAINE POUR GAZA

Du 14 février au 9 mars 2009, de Londres à Gaza, en passant par Paris, Madrid, Rabat, Alger, Tunis, Tripoli, Le Caire et bien d’autres villes…
Fin Janvier 2009, le bilan était déjà de 1300 morts à Gaza, dont 400 enfants…Aujourd’hui encore, on extrait des décombres des corps sans vie…
Alors que le nombre de mort augmente à Gaza, les leaders du monde et les medias sont déjà à la recherche d’un autre sujet d’actualité.

Ne détournons pas notre regard. Les palestiniens de Gaza ont besoin de notre aide maintenant, tout comme ils en avaient besoin lorsque pleuvaient des bombes et autres armes illégales d’Israël.

Partout dans le monde, des milliers de personnes ont manifesté pour la Palestine, ont pleuré à la vue des images à la télévision et se sont senties impuissantes devant cette souffrance.

Notre réponse citoyenne est l’organisation d’un convoi d’aide humanitaire pour la population de Gaza. Le convoi compte notamment des ambulances d’Ecosse, des camions de pompiers du nord-ouest de l’Angleterre et au moins 27 véhicules de Londres.

Il quittera la capitale britannique le 14 février 2009 et traversera la France, l’Espagne, le Maroc, l’Algérie, la Tunisie, la Libye, l’Egypte pour atteindre Rafah avant d’arriver a Gaza.

Ce convoi apportera bien sur une aide matérielle aux palestiniens, mais également un support médiatique que nous espérons considérable pour la cause Palestinienne, en attirant l’attention des medias et du public a travers diverses manifestations dans les villes traversées durant l’expédition.

Des collectes de fond et de biens ont eu lieu à travers la Grande Bretagne. Celles-ci ont eu un succès considérable.
Vous, citoyens du monde, pouvez en faire autant dans votre pays et nous aider dans ce projet:

1) Promouvoir notre action: Contacter les associations et medias susceptibles d’être intéressé par notre initiative, télévisions régionales et nationales, magazines, radios locales…faites du bruit !

4) Dons en nature: Nous prendrons ce que vous nous apporterez, mais cela dans la mesure de la place disponible.
En effet, du fait du succès de la collecte en Grande Bretagne, nos véhicules sont presque pleins.

Des vêtements neufs ou en très bon état et propre. Toute sorte de vêtements chauds pour hommes, femmes et enfants. Des pulls, blousons, manteaux, couvertures, chaussures. Chaussettes et sous-vêtements uniquement neufs.

5) Opération « boîte à chaussures » pour un enfant: offrez à un enfant de Gaza une boîte contenant par exemple:
· des jeux /jouets: ballon, voiturette, petits animaux en plastique, livres de coloriage, autocollants, petite peluche, jeux de cartes, billes, sifflet, petits jouets mécaniques (toupies, petits automates manuels), marionnettes, poupées…
· du matériel scolaire: crayons, feutres, craie, règle, taille crayon, gomme, petit bloc note.
· hygiène et petits accessoires: tétine, brosse à dents, gant de toilette, brosse, peigne, savon dans son emballage, chaussettes, gants, petits bonnets, mouchoirs en coton, porte monnaie.
· un message de soutien de votre part avec une photo de votre famille ou encore une carte postale de votre ville.
Attention ! Ne sont pas permis: dentifrice, chocolats, bonbons, gâteaux et biscuits, liquides quel que soit leur emballage, jouets : pistolets ou petits couteaux ou ceux susceptibles de faire peur aux enfants.

En tout cas, nous pourrons avoir des infos, puisque c'est Yvonne Ridley journaliste britannique qui s'est engagée à faire des reportages quotidiens à partir de la Caravane, sur le site VIVA PALESTINA (elle a déjà fait partie du voyage d'un bateau Free Gaza en été dernier).

En allant chercher des informations sur elle, autre que celles sur son propre site web, j'ai trouvé ceci, sur Wikipedia :

Yvonne Ridley (née en 1959) est une journaliste britannique. Employé par la BBC pour couvrir la guerre en Afghanistan, Yvonne Ridley est arrêtée par les talibans, puis libérée le 8 octobre 2001. Elle se convertit à l'Islam au retour de sa détention en juillet 2003

Yvonne Ridley: J’ai été élevée dans le protestantisme, dans l’Eglise d’Angleterre. Je chantais dans la chorale de l’église et j’étais l’institutrice de l’école du dimanche dans mon village au nord de l’angleterre.

IslamOnline: Aviez-vous quelques connaissances sur l’islam avant de rencontrer les Talibans?

Yvonne Ridley: Je savais si peu de choses que cela aurait pu tenir sur un timbre poste. Bien sur je souscrivais à tous les mythes à propos des femmes assujetties et que c’était une religion du mal et de la violence, pleine de fanatiques.

IslamOnline: Prévoyez-vous de vous convertir à l’Islam ou est-ce déjà fait?

Yvonne Ridley: Je suis sur le chemin de la conversion. Les rapports qui disent que je me suis déjà convertie sont prématurés.

IslamOnline: Qu’est-ce qui vous a menée à cette conversion?

Yvonne Ridley: J’ai fait une promesse à un imam Taliban que j’étudierais l’islam – si j’étais libérée. Il m’avait juste demandé si je voulais me convertir et j’étais terrifiée de dire ‘oui’ ou ‘non’ parce que quelque soit ma réponse cela aurait pu provoquer des accusations que j’étais changeante ou insultante et ainsi être lapidée!

IslamOnline: S’il y a une chose que vous trouvez intéressant dans l’islam, laquelle est-ce?

Yvonne Ridley: La véritable inspiration a été la rencontre et la connaissance de toutes les soeurs. Sans aucune exception je l’ai ai trouvées toutes très intelligentes, causantes, motivées, orientées vers les affaires internationales et politiques et d’un grand soutien. Bien sur cela chasse le mythe des femmes musulmanes timides, retirées, de la timide créature que l’on ne voit ni n’entend jamais.

IslamOnline: Parlez-nous un peu de vos jours de captivité avec les Talibans?

Yvonne Ridley: J’étais terrifiée. Non seulement j’avais été capturée par le régime le plus brutal et le plus mauvais du monde (ce sont les mots du président Bush pas les miens) mais en plus ils haïssaient les femmes! Je n’aurais jamais pensé que je verrais le coucher du soleil le premier jour. Il y a eu plusieurs autres fois où j’ai pensé que j’allais être fouettée ou exécutée. Une fois, quand j’ai perdu mon calme et que j’ai craché et insulté mes geôliers alors que j’étais dans la prison de Kaboul j’ai pensé que cela allait provoquer une réaction d’hostilité mais ils ont paru blessés et ils m’ont dit que j’étais leur ‘invitée’ et leur ‘sœur’!

Après quelques jours d’interrogatoire au quartier général des renseignements de Jalalabad, on m’a dit qu’ils croyaient que j’étais une espionne américaine et cela a été très énervant. Ils m’ont aussi donné une robe de mariée avant qu’un imam me demande si je voulais me convertir à l’Islam et cela a été très effrayant. Tout ce que je peux dire c’est qu’un homme en Afghanistan y a échappé belle!

Globalement, ils m’ont traitée avec une grande courtoisie et beaucoup de respect en dépit de ma réaction hostile pour avoir été enfermée. J’était entrée dans leur pays illégalement sans passeport ni visa, oui, j’étais tout à fait en tort et je pouvais aisément être accusée et jugée. Mon traitement par le régime 'le plus brutal et le plus mauvais du monde' est en complet contraste avec le traitement que subissent ces hommes qui sont à Camp X-Ray (Guantanamo Cuba).

IslamOnline: Avez-vous pu rencontrer certaines de leurs femmes?

Yvonne Ridley: Les seules femmes que j’ai rencontré quand j’étais en prison ont été six employées d’une organisation caritative chrétienne, 3 officiers femmes de la prison et deux femmes afghanes qui étaient enfermées pour avoir essayé de vendre un tapis à un étranger. A part les chrétiennes, deux Américaines, trois allemandes, et une australienne, aucune des autres ne parlait anglais alors je n’ai jamais eu vraiment l'occasion de communiquer avec une femme du pays. Cependant, le gouverneur de la prison, un homme qui avait l’air effrayant, faisait souvent mention de sa femme comme étant “la patronne”.

IslamOnline: Si vous deviez rencontrer à nouveau vos geôliers Talibans, que leur diriez-vous ?

Yvonne Ridley: Je l’ai fais! J’ai emmenée ma fille Daisy, âgée de 9 ans, en vacances en Afghanistan au mois de Mai et nous avons voyagé partout. Nous sommes entrées dans un ‘restaurant’ à quatre heures de routes de Kaboul et là j’ai vu des Talibans et des gens d’Al-Qaïda. J’ai reconnu trois de mes geôliers et j’ai été horrifiée. Cependant, l’un d’eux est venu parler à mon traducteur et a demandé ce que je faisais de retour en Afghanistan. Il a demandé si je reconnaissais quelqu’un et je lui ai juste demandé ce que cela pouvais leur faire d’être reconnus, autrement ce n’étais pas mon problème. Nous étions tous nerveux alors qu’il s’éloignait puis il est revenu quelques minutes plus tard et il a dit : “Nous avons aimé ce que vous avez dit de nous quand vous êtes rentrée à Londres. Merci d’avoir dit la vérité.”

J’ai nerveusement hoché la tête, je n’ai pas pu rester plus longtemps, mais on m’a dit plus tard que ma sécurité était assurée si jamais il m’arrivait de les rencontrer à nouveau. La personne avec laquelle j’aimerais vraiment m’asseoir et parler c’est Mullah Omar, le chef spirituel borgne des Talibans qui a ordonné ma libération sur des bases humanitaires. Je voudrais savoir pourquoi ils traitent si mal leurs femmes.

IslamOnline: Quel est votre avis sur les droits des femmes en Islam comparée à la société athée occidentale?

Yvonne Ridley: Ce que j'ai examiné attentivement quand j’ai lu le Qur’an ce sont les lois sur les biens et le divorce. J’ai été stupéfaite. J’ai pensé que cela aurait pu être écrit par un avocat aux affaires matrimoniales de Hollywood! En fait, c’est probablement de là qu’ils se sont inspirés. J’ai été aussi satisfaite de voir que les femmes sont égales concernant l’éducation et la spiritualité, mais le Qur’an reconnaît que nous avons la charge supplémentaire de la grossesse, de l’allaitement et des menstrues. J’aime à penser que nous sommes le modèle de luxe de la forme humaine puisque nous avons tant de fonctions supplémentaires!

IslamOnline: Comment votre famille prend-elle votre conversion?

Yvonne Ridley: Au départ ma famille a été choquée. Pensez donc, je m’étais enregistrée pour devenir le grand sorcier du Ku Klux Klan.

IslamOnline: Y a-t-il un message que vous aimeriez transmettre aux musulmans ?

Yvonne Ridley: Le 11 septembre a été la meilleure et la pire des choses qui soit arrivée à l’islam. Je sais que la confiance de nombreux frères et sœurs a été bouleversée, mais soyez fiers de ce que vous êtes et de ce que vous représentez. Ne soyez pas poussés à diluer vos croyances dans l’espoir de vous intégrer à ceux qui ont le pouvoir. Faites attention aux faux prophètes, en particuliers ceux qui tournent autour des portes du pouvoir prétendant épouser des opinions de votre part qu’ils disent être dans votre intérêt. Les chrétiens ont une bonne parole: “Plus proche est le curé, plus grand est le pêcheur!” Ce qui est merveilleux en Islam c’est d’avoir un lien direct avec Dieu. Vous n’avez pas besoin d’un intermédiaire. Paix et amour à tous.

Our Valentine to Palestine

TOMORROW is Valentine's Day, a celebration rooted in paganism until Christian leaders pegged it to the legend of a third century saint after failing miserably to stop the annual festival.

And so, in a few hours time, millions of people of faith and no faith across the world will be exchanging cards and flowers as symbols of their love, so I suppose it was quite apt that February 14 was chosen by British MP George Galloway as the day to send a gift to the people of Palestine.

But instead of a simple card and bunch of roses, Britain's best known politician decided his Valentine for Palestine would be a show stopper.

His journey from Big Ben to Baghdad ten years ago was a mammoth task, but nothing like Viva Palestina! which involves more than 100 vehicles, 285 people and a spectacular mile-long procession including fire engines, ambulances and a boat all bound from London to Gaza.

George is sending a land convoy of aid, gift wrapped in love and solidarity to the people of Gaza and I will be with him all the way recording the historic trip by blog.

I will be hoping to emulate the success in smashing the Israeli-imposed siege by sea when I arrived in Gaza last August (see picture) as a member of the Free Gaza Movement.

Tomorrow's convoy, stretching more than one mile, will roll from central London around noon on Saturday (GMT) and head for war-torn Gaza via France, Spain before winding its way across north Africa.

My daily diary will keep you informed of who is on the convoy, the human interest stories around each truck and van loaded with humanitarian aid and our adventures on the road.
Many of you who are reading this blog have donated cash and aid to the convoy, and as stakeholders in Viva Palestina it is only right you are kept informed of your investment in the future hopes of those in Gaza.

We are told there are quite a few official welcomes and receptions being planned for us on our journey which has already been described as the largest British convoy to cross the Maghreb since the Second World War.

From Dream to Reality

FIVE weeks ago Viva Palestina was a pipe dream and now it is a reality as more than 100 vehicles and 300 volunteers snake their way through France heading for Gaza.

Last night the show-stopping convoy rolled off a freight ferry in Ostend to embark on a historic mission of mercy to help the Palestinian people.

I spent the ferry crossing getting to know my fellow passengers and discovered they come from all walks of life from students to pensioners, estate agents to accountants, engineers, mechanics, housewives and doctors.

This morning I expect many of us are bleary eyed as the convoy heads for Bordeaux - I know I am, after a sleepless night trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in a car seat.
My eyes feel like sandpaper every time I blink.

You see this 5000 mile trip from London to Gaza isn't a jolly or five star vacation for any of us, although some are more organised than others with regards to finding a comfortable nook or cranny in which to sleep.

Press TV is very much part of the convoy and the only TV station to be there from start to finish. Regular reports will be filed from our SNG vehicle along the route, and there's already been some dramas and hitches.

A group who were carrying aid from communities in Blackburn were stopped by police shortly after they set off from their homes in the North of England but despite hysterical headlines in the tabloid media most have now been released and we're told there are efforts by Manchester police to reunite the group with the convoy.

The news was relayed on board the freight ferry bound for Ostend last night by one of the organisers Kevin Ovenden amid great cheers by those who had set off from Hyde Park in London after a rousing reception. Sporting a green Viva Palestina t-shirt he gave the opening introduction before the assembled travellers.

There were more cheers in store when we learned our convoy of 100 plus vehicles would double in size by the time we reach Libya next week - news has just come through that 100 large lorries are waiting to follow us into Egypt carrying even more aid.

Meanwhile, back in the UK charities like Islamic Help and the Al Khair Foundation are continuing with TV appeals and fund raisers to swell the coffers of Viva Palestina which will buy even more aid in Egypt before entering war-torn Gaza.

The convoy carrying in excess of £1m aid is already a record-breaker and will be the largest British land convoy to cross North Africa since the Second World War. Led by a bright red fire engine, the convoy has more than a dozen ambulances, countless vans and trucks plus a whacking great big generator brought along by the Bolton Massive (my nickname for the men from the Lancashire town). The generator will have enough power to supply a small hospital or school, so I'm told.
When you consider Viva Palestina was nothing more than a pipe dream five weeks ago, the achievement of pulling together the convoy has been nothing short of staggering.

The brainchild and initiative of Britain's best known politician RESPECT MP George Galloway, Viva Palestina has already motored its way into the record books and it is set to get even bigger. Not a man usually lost for words, the Bethnal Green and Bow MP looked overcome with emotion as he greeted and then waved off every single vehicle.

Much of the last few weeks have been spent travelling the length and breadth of Britain appealing for funds, support and volunteers by Galloway.

From the tears and anger of communities outraged by the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, thousands rallied to his call for aid and help in whatever way they could, and the efforts were open for the world to see on Saturday in central London.

Well George, I also counted the vehicles out of Hyde Park and counted them all in again at Ostend. But from my pit stop on France's Autoroute A10, I must sign off now and try and catch up with my fellow travellers. They shouldn't be too difficult to spot, that's for sure.

Alors que la caravane d’aide pour Gaza quitte l’Angleterre, 9 supporters arrêtés par les forces anti-terroristes britanniques

Selon les médias israéliens, 9 militants britanniques qui partaient rejoindre la caravane d’aide humanitaire pour Gaza ont été arrêtés par la police britannique antiterroriste, ainsi que l’aide qui se trouvait dans leurs véhicules et les véhicules eux-mêmes. La plupart d’entre eux ont été libérés sans accusation, et trois sont toujours en garde à vue.

La caravane qu’ils tentaient de rejoindre a quitté Londres samedi matin pour la Palestine, dirigée par le député britannique George Galloway. Le groupe a pris le nom de « Ligne de vie pour Gaza » et comprend plus d’une centaine de véhicules, dont douze ambulances, cinq camions, un bateau et un million de tonnes d’aide humanitaire. Depuis la Grande-Bretagne, ils passeront par la France, le Maroc, l’Algérie, la Tunisie, la Libye et l’Egypte, et envisagent de passer par la frontière de Gaza depuis l’Egypte le 2 mars.

Trois véhicules qui partaient de Blackburn, au nord de Londres, pour rejoindre la caravane ont été arrêtés par la police britannique antiterroriste lors d’une opération massive. Mais la police n’a pas dit pourquoi elle détenait les militants, ni de quoi ils étaient accusés. Leurs véhicules portaient des pancartes où on pouvait lire : « Arrêtez de tuer les enfants, Palestine Libre » et « De Blackburn (GB) à Gaza ».

L’énorme caravane d’aide a été organisé en seulement quatre semaines par plusieurs groupes, dont Viva Palestina, la Coalitation Stop the Wall, le Parti du Respect, l’Organisation anglo-arabe, plusieurs syndicats britanniques et un grand nombre d’organisations musulmanes.

Alors que la caravane partait, le député Galloway a déclaré à Sky News : « Une intifada balaie la Grande-Bretagne. C’est un mouvement de masse pacifique de soutien à la population assiégé de Gaza et de Palestine. Il a lieu partout, mais il est particulièrement fort dans le nord de l’Angleterre et en particulier parmi les jeunes Musulmans. Ce convoi en est la manifestation matérielle. En à peine un mois, une aspiration que j’avais exprimée lors d’une manifestation pro-palestinienne qui avait rassemblée 100.000 personnes le 10 janvier s’est transformée en plus de 100 véhicules et près de 300 personnes de partout en Grande Bretagne. Nous conduirons le plus grand convoi de véhicules britanniques par l’Afrique du Nord depuis Montgomery. »

Tous les participants à la caravane s’auto-financent, et tous les véhicules qu’ils conduisent, y compris les camions et les ambulances, seront donnés au peuple de Gaza lorsqu’ils arriveront le 2 mars.

These are the critera you must meet.

1. You are completely self-funded. This includes airfare, accommodation, transport, food, travel & health insurance and any other contigency that may arise

2. You hold a valid passport with at least more than six months left on it.

3. You obtain and pay for your own Visa.

4. You have had appropriate vacinations. (HEP A, TYPHOID, TETANUS, POLIO). These will need to be booked with you GP/travel health centre, as soon as possible - not the day before you depart.

4. You complete and sign the Indemity form/Contract we will provide (see left column).

This is a mission that you are going on, not a holiday or sight-seeing trip. You need to bring rucksack not a suitcase, and to travel light. We are not going to tell you what to bring, but please use your common sense. You need to be prepared to sleep rough if the need arises, therefore a sleeping bag will be an essential item. Remember it can get cold at night.

Unless you already have your own mission (ie you been have been tasked to purchase specific aid from funds raised by your network or group) then the job you will given is as a volunteer to support the Convoy.

Please be very aware that we are going to operate in the a country that is currently detaining its own citizens for protesting against the Israeli attack on Gaza and being involved with solidarity work. Therefore, there are some things we cannot do. (Please read the notes in the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides books regarding photography) We also do not want to put any Egyptians at risk of arrest.

The convoy is planned to arrive in Egypt sometime during the first week of March. You will need to book you flights accordingly. We shall not be putting the dates up on the website for obvious reasons. How long you intend to stay in Egypt is a matter of individual choice.

For all those wishing to go, and who pass the above criteria, we shall be arranging a meeting point for all internationals in Cairo. We will plan to link up with the convoy, wherever it is and plan to travel as a group. The situation may arise that this not enough room on the convoy for us to travel with it. Therefore, we shall have to seek to find alternative means of transport by which to travel with the convoy to Rafah.

Finally. Can you do all above without grumbling, work as part of a collective and be prepared to accept that plans may change at the last moment and so help with problem solving?

Not as easy as it sounds

If you ever thought travelling in a convoy was easy, think again.

This latest drive from Bordeaux in France to Madrid via San Sebastian in Spain was back-breaking and some of the vehicles just simply gave up ... unlike their drivers.

The indomitable spirit, true grit and determination of those on board Viva Palestina refused to be beaten by mere mechanical failures and set backs which challenge long distance travellers.
Tool kits, spare parts and willing hands were in evidence everywhere, along with lashings of wonderful hot tea brewed by a man wearing a bright red Fez.

I'm not sure what time the main body of the convoy rolled up to a sports hall on the outskirts of Madrid but it is now 3am (gmt) on Tuesday and I know scores of my fellow travellers are still on the road.

Unable to face the challenges of the steep hills, some have simply headed south to the ferry where they will wait for the rest of us to catch up.

Spirits were lifted in San Sebastian when all the vehicles pulled in to a giant car park where they were greeted by George Galloway, MP, the mastermind behind Viva Palestina. We'll all be back up in a few hours time to get the latest news and developments planned en route from George.

There's still a long way to go, but as I talked to the group it is quite clear that the focus is Gaza and each and every one on board is determined to reach the Palestinians there.

"It's that focus which keeps us going. We do feel like moaning, and it's only Day Three but we get our inspiration from each other and from the example set by the Palestinians.

"Let's face it, they could have given up a long time ago but their determination to rebuild their shattered lives feeds our determination to help them," said one man from Birmingham which is represented by 20 vehicles on the convoy."

Another morale booster, they say, has been Press TV's coverage on both the website and TV news which has been avidly watched by the families, friends and supporters in Britain as well as across the world.

No other media outlet has been on the convoy since Day 1 apart from Press TV which is becoming the first station of choice for viewers tuning in to Sky 515 and other satellites in search of news without spin.

The reason for me filing this particular report to you so late?

Well the Press TV crew also suffered a malfunction - our GPS system went down and yours truly did the navigating from Bordeaux to San Sebastian. I knew confidence in my map reading skills collapsed when our technical engineer Omid Gharbifard began using his compass and the position of the stars!

The good news is that we now have a replacement electronic navigating system in place and Omid has already keyed in the final destination ... Gaza City.

So, can we do it? In the words of a certain Mr Obama: "Yes we can."

For the Fishermen of Gaza

As the sun rose over the Tarifa ferry terminal in Southern Spain this morning the view was quite spectacular as row after row of vehicles from the Viva Palestina convoy lined up for the next leg of our mercy mission to Gaza.

But what really caught my eye this time was a boat which was being towed behind one of the vehicles.

People often forget that Gaza is a coastal strip which sits on the edge of the Mediterranean rim, and at one time the sea provided a decent living for the local fishermen.

The Israeli Navy has, with almost casual regularity, tried to ram, sink or scuttle the boats belonging to20the fishermen of Gaza.

We know this for a fact because evidence has been provided by international peace activists who have gone out fishing with the men of Gaza to show their solidarity with them.

The situation for the Palestinian fishermen is worse now than it was when I was on board the first boat in more than 40 years which sailed in to The Strip to break the Israeli blockade last August.

I am now told the coast has become a 'no go' zone.
On Saturday February 14th - Valentine's Day, as our convoy pulled out of central London, 23 year-old Rafiq abu Reala was shot by Israeli naval forces whilst fishing in Gazan territorial waters, approximately two nautical miles out from the port of Gaza city. He was in a simple fishing vessel, not much larger than a rowing boat, with a small outboard engine, known locally as a 'hassaka'.

According to the report I received this morning, Rafiq, his brother Rajab and another friend were following the course of a shoal of fish.

A group of five more hassakas were out at the time, about a kilometre to the west of Rafiq's boat, further out to sea. An Israeli naval gunboat approached the area and began shooting at the other hassakas, which quickly changed course and headed east, back towards shore. Suddenly Rafiq realised the gunboat was bearing down on their hassaka.
As he recounted the events of that day, Rafiq likened the predatory nature of the naval vessel to that of a wolf. It circled their fishing boat and began shooting heavy ammunition in their direction. The three terrified fishermen threw themselves down flat in the bottom of their boat.

The Israeli captain ordered them via megaphone to raise their nets and leave the area. At this point the gunboat was less then 20 metres from Rafiq's hassaka.

The second time the gunboat came around no attempt was made to communicate with the fishermen. Rafiq was desperately pulling in the nets with his back facing the gunboat. An M-16 assault rifle was fired hitting him twice with explosive 'dum-dum' bullets, which peppered his back with shrapnel from the bullets themselves.

The force of the shots threw him in the water, plunging him down about six or seven metres below the surface.

Rajab asked their friend to contr ol the boat while he rescued Rafiq. Being a strong swimmer, he dived in after Rafiq and pulled him out of the water into the hassaka. However, Rafiq was unconscious by this time.

The fishermen in this vessel had a mobile phone and made an emergency call. The stricken hassaka reached port at the same time as the ambulance arrived and Rafiq was taken to al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza city in a serious condition.

Doctors say metal shards are embedded in Rafiq's back and the shrapnel also penetrated his lungs.

It could take Rafiq months to fully recover yet he has a family to support. He married just six months ago and his wife is now expecting their first baby. After five years of working as a fisherman, he has experienced Israeli naval forces firing warning shots on many occasions but this was the first time he has been directly targeted.

However, Rajab survived being shot in the chest by the Israeli navy two and a half years ago.

The total of Gazan fishermen killed by the Israeli navy since 2000 is now 14. Rafi q described the level shooting on Saturday like an open war.

Palestinian fishermen have come under daily assaults from Israeli gunboats since Israel announced a unilateral ceasefire which supposedly came into force on 18th January.

Reports of heavy gunfire and even missile fire are now becoming the 'norm'. Rafiq is the third Gazan fisherman to be shot by the Israeli navy during this non-existant ceasefire. On 26th January, Alaa al-Habil was shot in the lower leg whilst trawling less than one nautical mile off the coast of Gaza. On 6th February, Mahmoud al-Nadar was shot in both legs whilst 1.5 nautical miles off the coast of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip.

Nowadays it is unthinkable for fishermen to venture beyond three nautical miles from the Gazan coast, with many vessels staying just metres from the beach. However, Gazan territorial waters reach 12 nautical miles offshore – indeed, the Oslo Accords grant a fishing zone extending as far as 20 nautical miles.

Israel is attempting to create arbitrary 'no-go' zones in the sea – enforced solely by the gun. They might succeed if it weren't for the resilience of the fishermen. All this is akin to what is happening on land. The Israeli Occupation Force has declared an area of Palestinian land a kilometre in from the Green Line a 'closed military zone', affecting an audaci ous land grab which threatens to swallow a vast swathe of rich agricultural land all the way along the eastern length of the Gaza strip.

Members of ISM Gaza Strip accompanying Palestinian fishermen on a regular basis and witnessed countless acts of Israeli military aggression against them whilst in Gazan territorial waters, despite a six-month ceasefire agreement holding at the time.

While Viva Palestina has only one boat to give to the fishermen of Gaza on this occasion, I wold urge anyone reading this column to think about these mediterranean fishermen and send more boats out to them so they can continue their honest trade.

And as for Gordon brown who is sending out his own convoy, may be the Royal Nav y might like to give some protection to the Gaza fishermen against the Israeli Navy I recently called the Pirates of the Mediterranean because of their lawless, criminal behaviour.

And, as I leave you with that thought, Viva Palestina is now about to board the ferry at Tarifa for Morocco where our North African journey begins its mission: A Lifeline to Gaza.

Day 5 - Morocco provides police escort and hotels…….

The convoy arrived in Tangier at 13:30 (GMT) to the first Muslim country (Morocco) on route to Gaza.
George Galloway texts to say:
“Just driven at 40mph through the streets of Tangier. Crowds of people lined the route cheering, giving victory signs and waving. Amazing!”
Here is an account of the Bradford crew’s experience………… “The feeling is immense peace, love, respect and humbleness. The people here are true brothers welcoming us with food, love and hospitality. When the convoy got off the ferry from Spain to Tangier the whole convoy group joined together in one big Jummat. We managed to get hold of Gerorge Galloway and record his declaration of gratitude to the Bradford crew. Will be uploaded soon as possible! Everyone is fine and enjoying the experience. It’s beautiful reading namaz in the open air, with millions of stars in the sky or with a blazing hot sun and cool breeze. We are heading to Rabbat. Keep us in your duahs!”
The people of Rabbat greeted the convoy today 15:30 (GMT). The locals have been very supportive and are dining with the convoy. A very emotional arrival saw cheers and tears. The Moroccan Government have extended their hospitality and provided accommodation for all those on the convoy along with a police escort all the way to the Algerian border.. Its great to see nations coming together for this cause.

A 'great day' in Morocco
The convoy is now resting - and what a well-deserved rest - in the Moroccan capital of Rabat.

George Galloway has sent texts which say:

"A great day. Local kids gave us Moroccoan flags with messages for Palestinian children. We've had meals with the locals in Rabat. People have been donating money in the street."

The convoy has been getting some very positive media coverage in Morocco.

Back at in Britain, the Viva Palestina team have been receiving messages of support from across the world - from Nigeria to France, Canada and the USA to Austria, Norway and countries of the Middle East

We recieved this message this evening from Morocco.

"Hi. What is actually amazing is what the convoy has undertaken to do. Please let Mr. George Gallaway know how much we admire his initiative. Our fellow country people cannot but see, in this action, some real embodiment of the great values of bravery, heroism and humanitarianism - and hailing the convoy on its arrival in our country the way Mr. Gallaway's text describes, is the least our people can do to express their deep respect and gratitude for such an initiative.

They expect to spend a day there recovering and waiting for delayed vehicles to catch up.

• هذا وأكد صباح المختاري على وجود نساء أيضا بالقافلة وأنهن في أحسن حال وصابرات إلى جانب إخوانهم الرجال في سبيل إيصال المساعدة لمستحقيها من أطفال وأرامل بدون منازل ومدارس بعد تنفيذ الكيان الصهيوني لمجزرته.
  
• اللجنة الشعبية لنصرة فلسطين من جهتها، كشفت عن "أجندتها" في إطار استقبال ودعم القافلة وقررت في اجتماعها أمس، بمقر الشروق اليومي تدعيم القافلة بشاحنات أخرى وتكثيف الجهود بالتنسيق مع الجمعيات الخيرية وذوي الإحسان للمساعدة على توفير أكبر قدر ممكن من المساعدات لأهل غزة.
